Permafrost is an important part of the cryosphere with a wide distribution. As a product of the climate, it is under degradation caused by climate warming, along with human activities. This change has been causing greenhouse gases emission, thaw settlement of ground surface, changes on eco-system and even damages to infrastructures. Therefore, it is very important to strengthen permafrost research and promote international cooperation to adapt to the degradation.
The 12th ICOP International Conference on Permafrost (12th ICOP) aims to be held for addressing various frontiers in permafrost research, meanwhile for enhancing international scientific cooperation. The conference theme is “Permafrost environments under persistent warming: Challenges for scientific assessment and engineering practice”, focusing on permafrost changes and corresponding environmental affects under climate warming, covering recent acknowledgments in all fields of permafrost research around the world, including 8 sessions (Engineering-construction and design; Frost heave and thaw subsidence; Carbon biogeochemistry; Coastlines; Geohazards; Remote Sensing; Education and so on).
To present a whole view on novel permafrost researches of the 12th ICOP, the international Open Access journal Sciences in Cold and Arid Regions hosts a special issue and encourages paper submission aiming at emerging scientific communications. The emphasis is placed on original research, both analytical and experimental, covering all aspects of permafrost research. High-quality research papers are solicited in, but are not limited to, shorter communications are also welcome. When outstanding new advances are made, or when new areas have been developed to a definitive stage, special review articles will be considered as well. All manuscripts should be written in English using template of Sciences in Cold and Arid Regions. The deadline for manuscript submission of the special issue is June 15, 2020.
Journal Introduction:
Sciences in Cold and Arid Regions (SCAR) is a bimonthly journal that publishes the latest research achievements in processes and the patterns of the Earth surface system in cold and arid regions in English. Researches in cold regions emphasize particularly on the cold-region-characterized physical, chemical and biological processes and their interactions, and on the response of cryosphere to global change and human activities as well as their effects on environment and the acclimatizable strategies; focus on the objects of glacier, snow, river, lake, sea ice, permafrost and seasonal frozen ground, and periglacial geomorphology, etc.; and think much of cold regions engineering and technology. Researches in arid regions emphasize particularly on the arid-region-characterized physical, chemical and biological processes and their interactions, and on the response of arid regions to global change and human activities as well as their effects on environment and the acclimatizable strategies; focus on the objects of desert, oasis, loess, and aeolian landforms, etc.; and support integrated studies on mountain-desert-oasis system in arid watershed with water resources as masterstroke, so as to provide reliable technological support for water safety, ecology safety and food safety in arid regions.
