Professor Zichu Xie (1937–2020) passed away on January 25, 2020 in Changsha, Hunan Province China. He has pioneered studies in glaciology and polar science in China. He has been a driving force for his field of studies in China to be one of the important parts in the international glaciological community while served as the director of the Lanzhou Institute of Glaciology and Geocryology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences during 1984 and 1991. The special issue of Science in Cold and Arid Regions (SCAR) is devoted to the memory of Prof. Zichu Xie and the glaciology he built up through many major contributions on glacier mass balance, snow cover processes, glacier change and its response to climate change, permafrost dynamics, hydrology of snow and ice, snow and ice related hazards and so on.
SCAR calls for papers in this special issue on topics characterized by original, innovative and advanced studies or reviews in cryosphere science. SCAR operates an online submission and rigorous peer review system. The special issue will be compiled into one issue of volume 12, 2020. The deadline of manuscript submission for this special issue is September 30, 2020.
